Men of World War II: Fighting Men at Ease
by Evan Bachner

Men of World War II: Fighting Men at Ease Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

The long awaited follow up to the original At Ease presents 160 new, never before published photographs of WWII Navy men. These photos are not the combat photography we’re so accustomed to seeing; here are disarmingly winsome and playful pictures of sailors and soldiers at leisure, displaying an innocent affection for each other that is practically unthinkable today. This was a time when men had no reservations about showing their devotion to their comrades through physical contact, and the included photographs are truly snapshots of a lost era. This volume includes photos from the National Archives by Edward J. Steichen, Wayne Miller, Horace Bristol, Victor Jorgensen, Barrett Gallagher, and many others.

About the Author

Evan Bachner spent more than six years researching these photographs, all sparked by a single photograph discovered in a gallery. He lives in New York City.

Evan has done it again! Is there no end to the gay-themed photos available from the Archives? LOL
Will this be a lifelong career?

Well, truth be told, these "intimate" photos are even better than those in "At Ease", his first photo essay. The photos here have been selected for their unabashed intimacy. These are not photos of effeminate guys; these are the boys next door and are part of the "greatest generation".

While obviously of interest to gay men, this photobook is a paean to an uninhibited, non-physical, almost Greek "love" found to exist between men at war who really do not know how many more days they have to live. Inhibitions be gone!
