Bethany Moreton: IMG Culture War on Aisle 5? Wal-Mart, Evangelicals, and "Extreme Capitalism"

"In the 'culture wars' narrative of the Republican ascendancy, this slippage represents the greatest con in recent history: while you rush to defend marriage or protect the unborn, please pay no attention to the financier behind the curtain." Continue »

Sparkle and Spin: A Book about Word

by Ann Rand

Sparkle and Spin: A Book about Word Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Through harmony and rhythm, resonance and pitch, Ann Rand inspires readers to listen to the tuneful play of her text as it sings off each page. Illustrated with graphic designer Paul Rand's colorful, witty artwork, Sparkle and Spin is a children's classic (now happily available again through Chronicle Books) that reveals to young readers the power and music in the words they use every day.
"Paul Rand did not set out to create classic children's books, he simply wanted to make pictures that were playful. Like the alchemist of old, he transformed unlikely abstract forms into icons that inspired children and adults—and laid the foundation for two books that have indeed become children'sclassics." —Steven Heller, author of Paul Rand

Sparkle and Spin: A Book About Words by Ann and Paul Rand is beautifully reprinted with a sparkling dust-jacket and classic design. This book, first published in 1957, uses cheerful language to explain the way words feel, communicate, sound, and look. The illustrations are filled with creative and expressive graphic design from the 1950's. The text rhymes along, exploring the many sides of words, while entertaining young readers with a lighthearted spirit.

My first-grader is a beginner reader right now, so it was great to read this book together. Each page was a starting point from which we could talk more about different kinds of words and the diverse uses and meanings of them. Such as how some words sound the same, but are spelled different and have different meanings. Also, how words sometimes sound like what they are describing.

Sparkle and Spin is a playful exploration of the ways of words, with creative text and pictures that will delight kids and adults. I'm glad this classic is back in print as a quality hardback.
