About the Author

He is also the editor of Poetry 180: A Turning Back to Poetry and 180 More: Extraordinary Poems for Every Day. A distinguished professor of English at Lehman College of the City University of New York, he was Poet Laureate of the United States from 2001 to 2003 and Poet Laureate of New York State from 2004 to 2006.

As I move into the 74th year of my life, I pick up any page in "Ballistics" by Billy Collins and find the line "Crashing through the iron gates of life is what it is all about" and reflect on the September 17 murder of my nephew Sean. He did just that and died trying to get funds to send for his wife in the Philippines. He "drained the cup of life to the dregs" so I am strangely comforted.

Poetry by Collins is healing. Don't miss this collection. You can't forget his lines, his meaning.
