Publisher Comments:

“Matthew had taken the scrawny little hand awkwardly in his; then and there he decided what to do. He could not tell this child with the glowing eyes that there had been a mistake. . . .”

When eleven-year-old Anne Shirley arrives at Green Gables with nothing but a carpetbag and an overactive imagination, she knows that she has found her home. But first she must convince the Cuthberts to let her stay, even though she isnt the boy theyd hoped for. The loquacious Anne quickly finds her way into their hearts, as she has with generations of readers, and her charming, ingenious adventures in Avonlea, filled with colorful characters and tender escapades, linger forever in our memories.

This Modern Library edition of the first of L. M. Montgomerys beloved and immensely popular Avonlea novels features the restored original text and an Introduction by the noted childrens literature scholar Jack Zipes.

Synopsis:

When the Cathberts adopt an orphan, they aren't prepared for Anne Shirley. But the spunky heroine wins everyone's heart and finds herself a true home at last.

About the Author

L. M. Montgomery was born in 1874 on Prince Edward Island in Canada, the setting of nineteen of her twenty novels. She died in Toronto in 1942.

I recently started re-reading this old favorite, and was immediately enthralled with Anne and her imagination. It's been years since I've picked up the Anne books, and now I can't wait until my daughters are old enough to enjoy them with me.
