Lawrence became a popular hero for his role in the 1916 Arab rebellion against Turkish rule. Upon his return to England, Lawrence devoted himself to the Arab cause. When his efforts came to naught, Lawrence resigned from the Colonial Office and sought refuge in the ranks of enlisted men, changing his name repeatedly to escape detection, until his untimely death in a 1935 motorcycle crash.
