features styles and artists in jazz and blues, beginning with their
roots and style during the 1910s through the contemporary era. Each
chapter has separate sections on the two genres, further divided by
themes, styles, and key artists, which include links to recordings
online, color and b&w illustrations, and lists of classic recordings.
Because the encyclopedia is selective, only two to five artists in
each section have relatively long entries, but an alphabetical
listing of brief sketches of other prominent artists concludes each
chapter. The book ends with a description of instruments and
equipment. The authors are freelance writers, editors, and regular
contributors to music magazines. Mandel (New York University) is a
writer and editor specializing in jazz and blues.
