Based on a symposium held during the 1999 ACS meeting, this collection of 19 papers presents new synthetic and analytical procedures and application technologies for water-soluble polymers. The contributors discuss stabilization in water and subsequent assembly onto appropriate substrates by microstructural elements responsive to stimuli such as pH, ionic strength, shear stress, light and temperature. Topics include synthesis of novel shell cross-linked micelles with hydrophilic cores, thermogelation in aqueous polymer solutions, proteins as amphipathic biopolymeric materials, and dilute polymer solutions in extensional flow through porous media.
