The Confessionby Domenic Stansberry
Edgar Award Nominee for Best Paperback Original of the Year
Synopses & Reviews
Jake Danser has it all: a beautiful wife, a house in the California hills, a high-profile job as a forensic psychologist. But he's also got a mistress. And when Jake's mistress is found strangled to death with his necktie, it's up to him to prove he didn't do it. But how can he, when all the evidence says he did?
"In Edgar-nominee Stansberry's compelling and incredibly dark modern noir shocker, forensic psychologist Jake Danser alternates between his day job — interviewing murder suspects then testifying to their culpability — and bedding as many women as possible without letting his beautiful wife catch on. When one of his mistresses ends up dead, the focus turns on Danser, and a weighty knot of a psychological puzzle begins to slowly unravel. Danser is a fascinating narrator because he's a shifty one, telling his story in small, measured bits ('it is true, there are a few things I haven't mentioned here about Angela and myself,' he says nearly halfway into the story); the things going on in the world outside him are almost of secondary interest to what is going on inside his head. While the Hard Case series consciously strives for a pulp feel with retro artwork and packaging, the writing itself is infused with a modern sensibility — after all, Philip Marlowe never said anything like 'for a minute I was a man within the void, and it was the void that imagined me.' Stansberry pours on the blood and guts in places, so much so that readers may want to take a shower upon finishing, but lovers of industrial strength neo-noir will savor the book's thoroughly seamy atmosphere. Agent, Fred Hill. (Nov. 2)" Publishers Weekly (Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information, Inc.)
"A novel in the literary tradition of The Killer Inside Me, and every bit as powerful. Stansberry is an extraordinarily evocative writer." George Pelecanos, author of Hell to Pay and Soul Circus
"Genuine noir, worthy of Thompson or Hughes at their best." Eddie Muller
"[A] tightrope-walk of a novel...The Confession is a consummate page-turner." This Week
A nightmarish tale of psychological suspense from the two-time Edgar Award-nominated author of The Last Days of Il Duce.
About the Author
Domenic Stansberry has been nominated three times for the Edgar Allan Poe Award, first for The Spoiler, then for The Last Days of Il Duce (which was also nominated for the Hammett Prize), and most recently for his Hard Case Crime novel, The Confession. His other novels include Manifesto For the Dead, an evocative look at the latter days of pulp writer Jim Thompson. He lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife, the poet Gillian Conoley, and their daughter Gillis.
From World War II through the 1960s, paperback crime novels were one of the fastest-selling categories in book publishing. Millions of readers snapped up hundreds of millions of books by well-known authors like Erle Stanley Gardner and Mickey Spillane, as well as by promising young writers like Lawrence Block, Elmore Leonard, and Ed McBain. Today, Block, Leonard, and McBain still make the bestseller lists with each new hardcover — but the pulp novels that first captured the public's imagination weren't hardcovers. They were paperbacks you could fit in your back pocket, with jaw-dropping cover paintings and bare-knuckled prose that grabbed you by the collar with the first sentence and held you until the last page. No one's published books like that in years.
Hard Case Crime is dedicated to reviving the vigor and excitement, the suspense and thrills — the sheer entertainment — of the golden age of paperback crime novels, both by bringing back into print the best work of the pulp era and by introducing readers to new work by some of today's most powerful writers and artists. Determined detectives and dangerous women...fortune hunters and vengeance seekers...ingenious criminals and men on the run for their lives...Hard Case Crime novels offer everything you want from a great story, all in handsome and affordable mass-market editions.
