Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

A groundbreaking and always controversial musician, M.I.A. is an influential artist and an important cultural figure of the last decade. Here is a documentation of her entire visual output and a telling of her story in collages, photos, and prints from her early years in art school at Central Saint Martins London through to her hugely successful three albums, mixtapes, and live performances at PS1 MoMA, Coachella, various exhibitions, installations, and music video shoots. The artwork is comprised of a wide variety of materials and media: video stills turned to stencils pieced back together to make animated installations; spray-painted canvasses scanned then made into digital collages; photographs videotaped, then run through bad computer connections to create graphic prints; artwork on nails, walls, prints for T-shirts, handmade stage costumes—anything she could find while she was touring. Also included are assorted lyrics and portions of an exclusive interview in which she discusses candidly the personal events and themes which informed her art and music at the time of each campaign. Includes foreword by Steve Loveridge, friend since her art school days and frequent creative collaborator with M.I.A.

Synopsis:

An autobiographical monograph in collages made by the powerful and thought-provoking artist herself. A groundbreaking and always controversial musician, M.I.A. is an influential artist and an important cultural figure of the last decade. Here is a documentation of her entire visual output and a telling of her story in collages, photos, sketches, and notes from her early years as a visual artist through to her hugely successful three albums, mixtapes, and into her latest, fourth album release and tour. The book is comprised of original artwork, original video treatments, and behind-the-scenes photos (on tour and in the studio). Also included are assorted lyrics and descriptions of her creative process for each album campaign—from recording sessions to her videos and travel photos on set to the creation of her costumes through to the live performances. On the eve of the release of her fourth album, M.I.A. approaches this visual retrospective the same way she approaches her music—mashing up and remixing the graphics, illustrations, and provocative photos from the media and internet that have influenced her to create something new that is uniquely hers.

About the Author

Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam, M.I.A. (her stage name, “Missing in Act(i)on”) is an English musician, producer, painter, and director. Her music combines elements of hip-hop, electronica, dance, alternative, and influences from around the world. She is the first artist to be nominated for all of the following awards: an Academy Award (for her work on the soundtrack for Slumdog Millionaire), two Grammys, a Brit Award, and Mercury Prize; and the first artist of Asian descent to be nominated for an Academy Award and Grammy in the same year. The first nine years of her life were marked by displacement due to the Sri Lankan civil war—a theme that influences her work, which is often political.
