Publisher Comments:

Miriam Black knows when you will die.

Still in her early twenties, she's foreseen hundreds of car crashes, heart attacks, strokes, suicides, and slow deaths by cancer. But when Miriam hitches a ride with truck driver Louis Darling and shakes his hand, she sees that in thirty days Louis will be gruesomely murdered while he calls her name.

Miriam has given up trying to save people; that only makes their deaths happen. But Louis will die because he met her, and she will be the next victim. No matter what she does she can't save Louis. But if she wants to stay alive, she'll have to try.

File Under: Urban Fantasy [ Touch Of Death | The Future Is Written | Free Way | Surviving ]

Review:

"In this horror-tinged adventure, Wendig (Double Dead) plays with the concepts of predestination and free will. Miriam Black, cursed to know the destined death of anyone she touches, has resigned herself to acting as an agent of fate, facilitating deaths and looting the bodies left in her wake. Then she meets trucker Louis Darling and discovers that she'll be present at his murder in the near future. In a rare attempt to defy destiny, she abandons Louis, only to end up as the unwilling accomplice of con man Ashley Gaines. This brings her back into contact with Louis, and gets the attention of a merciless band of murderous criminals who prove that although Miriam can see the future, it's near-impossible to change it. Visceral and often brutal, this tale vibrates with emotional rawness that helps to paint a bleak, unrelenting picture of life on the edge. Agent: Stacia Decker, Donald Maass Literary Agency. Refreshingly unusual, witty, macabre, funny, quirky, shocking, revolting, engrossing, and clever, Blackbirds is my very favorite book read in 2012. Chuck Wendig is a writer I will watch and follow - also enjoy his website / blog. Miriam is the character of the year - expertly created and bursting with life. I have never read Chuck Pahleniuk? but I'm thinking his readers must enjoy quirky, and would enjoy Wendig. I had to let you know about this deliciously wicked find of mine.

Wow. Just wow. I picked this book up and didn't put it down again until I was finished (much to the chagrin of my husband and toddler). Miriam is such well developed character that it feels as if she just grabs you by the coat (no skin contact for goodness sakes!) and drags you along her darkly funny, gruesome, twisted way. I've hardly been able to sleep waiting for Mockingbird ...

It's weird. I'm the kind of guy who likes family dramas and movies with happy endings. I would never go to a horror movie to save my life. But for some reason, I am intrigued by really dark stories in books.

This is an uber-dark story. It's really creepy with gory violence and spooky dreams. I won't give anything away, but I liked the book. I can't wait for book two in the Miriam Black series: Mockingbirds. Really, I couldn't wait. So I'm reading another Chuck Wendig book, Double Dead.
