My Dam Life: Three Years in Holland (Lonely Planet Journeys)by Sean Condon
Synopses & ReviewsPublisher Comments:In Sean & David's Long Drive he careered around Australia with his laconic pal David in a retro Ford Falcon. In Drive Thru America he and David cruised the States in a very uncool Chrysler Neon. Now Australian humorist Sean Condon is married and living in Amsterdam - jobless, homeless, careless and Dave-less. In My 'Dam Life he casts a witty, watchful and wonderfully self-deprecating eye over his expat experience of laziness and leisure, dreams and destiny in the Venice of the North. With his uncanny ability to seek out the absurd in everyday life, Sean finds plenty of targets in a city of hemp and high culture, canals and bicycles, idiosyncratic plumbing and internationally unrenowned cuisine. My 'Dam Life strikes a hilarious chord with anyone who has followed their dream of starting a new life abroad. Review:"Fans of offbeat travel literature rejoice! Condon, coauthor of Sean and David's Long Drive (1996) and Drive thru America (1998), returns with this hysterical, delightful, and (mostly) true account of his temporary residence in Amsterdam....Stylistically and philosophically, Condon is as close to Bill Bryson as it's possible to be. He mixes fascinating facts with hilarious humor, peppers the book with an assortment of wild and wonderful supporting characters (Francis Ford Coppola and Monica Lewinsky, if you can believe it, make cameo appearances here), and keeps us thoroughly in stitches from beginning to end. This one's an absolute must-read." David Pitt, Booklist Review:When most of us think of Amsterdam, we think of white bicycles and canals and cafes where you can get stoned on legal hash and Anne Frank. Condon's Amsterdam is rather different. It's a place of a language that is impossible to learn, a government that is impossible to deal with (especially for those holding jobs not permitted to visitors) and of housing that is impossible to find. Condon tells us that Anne Frank's family was fingered not by a German or a Nazi but by a Dutch neighbor. It was someone, he suspects, who coveted their rather large if hidden apartment....He's a tall tale spinner, and when he is good, he is very very good --- the kind of writer to make you giggle even at 6:30 A.M. while you are on the Eighth Avenue Local and no one else around you is awake, much less laughing....he's someone you and I would want to hang out with, a genuine gas who can turn buying stamps into a major adventure." Hans J. W. Werner, Ralph magazine Synopsis:Thirtysomething Australian humorist, writer, and advertising hack Condon moved to the Netherlands in 1998 with his half-Dutch wife. Their subsequent trials and tribulations are vividly recounted in this witty prose. Synopsis:Sean Condon has moved to Amsterdam. He got married, and he's unemployed (what's worse, so is his wife). Sean is back and funnier than ever, this time exploring the strange habits of the Dutch. He also keeps a watchful and wonderfully self-deprecating eye on the whole strange business of writing about yourself doing, well, nothing much, in this post-modern age. Sean's uncanny ability to find the absurd in everyday life misses nothing and My 'Dam Life will strike a side-splitting chord with anyone who has ever been unemployed, been married or tried not to be deported from a foreign land. About the AuthorSean Condon was born in Perth, Australia, in 1965. He went to schoool from about 1970 until 1983. He mucked around and 'wasted his life' from '84-90, when he got his first job in advertising as a junior copywriter (which was still a 'waste of time', but a paid one). His widely ignored but nonetheless immensely popular Sean & David's Long Drive was published by Lonely Planet in 1996. Later that year he left for America to Drive thru America, and did not return to the horrors of advertising. Sean now lives in Amsterdam, where he still spends his time washing the dishes and keeping the flat nice for his girlfriend who still has a 'proper job'.
