This book is the complete guide to simple soldering. Soldering Made Simple takes all the mystery and fear out of soldering so that amateur jewelry makers — even those who have never held a torch — feel empowered and confident. Friendly and thorough instructional text and step-by-step photos help readers build skills gradually, which they can then employ with the included projects. Joe Silvera presents soldering techniques that use a simple setup, a handheld butane torch that is safe and easy to operate, and a few other supplies.

I've been taking beginner and continuing metalsmithing classes for about a year now. I was hooked after my first class! However, it can be frustrating to wait until you have access to a jewelry studio (and it can be prohibitively expensive, too!). But a remarkable amount of jewelry-making can be done safely with a few inexpensive tools and a workspace in your home.
This book is the best I've seen for in-depth but easy-to-understand discussion of how solder works, and the differences between types of solder and their intended uses. He also is very safety-oriented and explains necessary safety precautions. Having mostly worked with silver, I wasn't sure about soldering cheaper metals like bronze and copper, but this book discusses those, too. The book is well-organized, easy to read, and has a nice set of projects that allow you to practice a variety of soldering skills.
Highly recommend this for the amateur jeweler!
