Gordon's account of teaching writing in Washington prisons is aided by essays and stories contributed by the prisoners themselves. Together, Gordon and his students provide revealing glimpses of this vast, secret-laden subculture of incarcerated individuals, which nationwide comprises more than two million U.S. citizens.

I read this book years ago and recently revisited it. A second read certainly doesn't disappoint. This is fine collection of stories that lays bare the raw emotion and turmoil of the prisoners mind. Gordon know his stuff here the stories he chose to include are nothing short of brilliant. 'Seventeen Fistfights Later' by Michael Collins, in particular, struck a cord with me.
Gritty, sad, anger-inducing...I highly recommend this collection if you are interested in taking a peek into the belly of the beast.
