More copies of this ISBNNative Trees for North American Landscapes: From the Atlantic to the Rockiesby Guy Sternberg
Synopses & ReviewsPublisher Comments:Many common native trees are just as beautiful as cultivated exotics. Since they have evolved with local conditions and are well adapted to their climate, they often require less maintenance and won't escape to invade a balanced ecosystem. The authors' extensive horticultural knowledge is distilled in this comprehensive cross section of trees native to North America, from the Atlantic to the Rockies and from northern Canada to the Gulf Coast. The main section of the book is divided into tree profiles, each describing flowers and fruit, native and adaptive range, culture, and problems. The authors also list the best seasonal features — whether a tree has striking bark in winter, for example, or bright fruit in fall. In all, more than 650 species and varieties, and more than 500 cultivars, are discussed.
Book News Annotation:After several introductory chapters on native trees and on managing trees in the landscape, 650 species and varieties and 500-plus cultivars are profiled, with text and photo description of flowers and fruit, native and adaptive range, culture, problems, and best seasonal features. The photos show details of the trees' features as well as how mature specimens look in the landscape, and though their reproduction is flat, that deficiency does not detract substantially from the informational value of the book. Useful appendices include a tree selection guide, a zone map, a glossary, and plentiful references to books and websites. Sternberg, a landscape architect, arborist, tree consultant, writer, lecturer, and photographer based in Illinois was assisted by Jim Wilson (now based in Missouri), a veteran horticulturist and formerly a cohost of the Victory Garden television series.
