Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Much of life on earth begins and ends with seeds. From the practical concerns of seed savers and collectors to the ancient lore, history, and biology of seeds, this is a must read for anyone interested in preserving seed biodiversity. Detailed advice on buying, storing and germinating, sterilizing soil, indoor to outdoor transplanting — even building cold frames, is included. Blending science and hands-on experience, Seeds is fascinating, practical, and useful.

Book News Annotation:

Seed hold a certain fascination for those who believe the sun will rise after all tomorrow. Here, artist, writer, and speaker Loewer describes the lore of seeds and their use in providing beauty and nourishment. He includes the place of seeds in the history of science, the processes by which seeds operate, ways to store seed for the future, the business end of seeds (including an examination of the big seed houses, nurseries and exchanges), collecting seeds and preserving heirloom species, and planting seeds successfully (including some very helpful information on soils, water, and nutrients needed). He provides illustrations of seeds, their germination, dispersion, handling, and storage throughout.
