Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

This comprehensive reference describes plants native to the Pacific Northwest—the ferns and conifers; annuals, perennials, and grasses; and flowering trees and shrubs that populate and define this distinctive region. Featured are some 530 subject species that occur naturally from southwestern Alaska to Oregon's border with California, and from the coast east to Idaho, plants that are not only beautiful ornamentals but important components of habitat diversity.

Illustrated throughout with nearly 600 eye-popping color photographs and original pen-and-ink drawings, the book is smartly separated by plant type into five encyclopedic sections. Detailed descriptions include reommendations for cultivation and siting, from streambanks to parking strips, and lists suggesting natives for particular garden situations or themes—arid or sodden; hedgerows and meadows; hummingbird and rock gardens—concludes the book.

Gardeners and conservationists alike will find much of value and interest in this impeccably presented and illustrated regional resource, which is sure to become a classic on the subject.

Book News Annotation:

Designed for gardeners interested in incorporating native plants into their gardens in the Pacific Northwest (rather than a comprehensive encyclopedia of its native plants), this beautiful--and surprisingly affordable--reference contains entries for 530 native annuals, perennials, trees, shrubs, ferns, and grasses. Each entry contains a description followed by notes on cultivation, propagation, native habitat and range, and notes that describe additional information, including the traditional uses of the plant by non- European native people. A color photo accompanies each entry. The reference is arranged alphabetically by Latin name, with the common name or names listed below. A concluding section lists plants by special situations and purposes, including to attract birds and butterflies. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

This is a wonderful book. I call it the "Bible" for gardening with native plants. When I started incorporating more native plants into my garden (our garden received the Portland Audubon Soviety's Backyard Habitat Certication) I was looking for a comprehensive book that would give me detailed information on what type of plants to plant where in my garden. It has descriptions of a wide variety of native plants and allows users to expand beyond the usual Oregon grape and red flowering currant suggestions. This book is a must- have for any aspiring or experienced native gardener.
