Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

With the advent of aviation in the late nineteenth century, archaeologists realized the potential of a new point of view; combining flight with photography allowed archaeological sites to be studied from the air. By the early twentieth century, aerial archaeology had become an established

research method. Ancient urban settlements, necropolises buried in rubble or sand, and ancient drainage systems could be seen more clearly from above-in some cases, these sites were discernible only from the air.

This magnificent collection of aerial photographs of the world's foremost archaeological sites covers 249 locations in over fifty countries. Moving from Hadrian's Wall to Uluru, from the Tower of Babel to the Nasca Lines, from Tara to Jerusalem, readers can now view the familiar from a new

perspective-above. Leading aerial photographer Georg Gerster has teamed up with archaeologist Charlotte Trumpler to shed new light on the dawn of civilization.

Book News Annotation:

Aerial photography plays an important role in the field of archaeology: it allows details visible on the ground to come together to form a whole, and seemingly disparate fragments to form a pattern. This oversize (9.75x11.75") volume displays almost 250 color aerial photographs from archaeological sites in over 50 countries, all taken by photographer/journalist Gerster. The book is organized by types of sites: settlements, palaces, festival sites, fortifications, graves, sacred sites, and monumental geoglyphs. Also discussed is the history of aerial photography in archaeology; water, land, and mineral resources; looting, and the photographer's log. Includes glossary, list of countries, and list of archeological sites, but no subject index. Originally published in German by Schirmer/Mosel, Munich, 2003.

Synopsis:

Now available in paperback, The Past From Above presents stunning aerial photographs of 250 of the world's foremost archaeological sites. The photographer, Georg Gerster, has been shooting ancient sites from the air for more than fifty years. In this current collection, his subjects range from the temple complex at Karnak to the Great Wall of China, and from the Acropolis in Athens to Aztec palaces in Mexico. Gerster's photographs are technical achievements--often produced under hair-raising circumstances--in their own right but at the same time offer a unique visual history of mankind stretching back to the dawn of civilization. Charlotte Tr:umpler introduces the photographs with an overview of the critical role that aerial photography has played in archaeological research.

About the Author
