Kozo Hiraoka has, in a few short years become a recognized authority in the design and construction of Live Steam locomotives?especially the geared locomotives of the lumbering era around then turn of the 20th century.

Working without castings, he has been able to produce true-to-prototype versions of the Shay, the Heisler and the Climax locomotives.

Even more important, he has developed a technique for relating the step-by-step instructions for duplicating his work, making it possible for amateur and experienced machinists all over the world to build beautiful operating miniature locomotives.

Kozo's first book, Building the Shay, has been completely re-edited from the material first offered in Live Steam magazine several years ago. In addition to any revisions and corrections to the text and drawing presentation, he has completely engineered boilers for 1" and 1½" scale locomotives and covered many other details that require more than simple multiplication of dimensions to be effective. Also included in this volume are several short articles describing the construction of valves and tools used in this project. Examples of locomotives built by others to Kozo's design are shown as well.

Far from being restricted to the work involved in building a particular locomotive, the techniques and features can be applied to any working Live Steam locomotive. A hand pump from moving water from the tender to the boiler, a unique cam-mounted water pump for axle-mounted installations, techniques for fabricating any basic or accessory detail of any model locomotive are all covered in this book?making it an invaluable aid in any Live Steamer's library.

And, if you need incentive to get started in the wonderful hobby of metal working and machining, you need only know that this author's training and vocation are in petro-chemical engineering. His mastering of the use of machine tools, the development of techniques for fabricating, the beautiful inked drawings showing not only the dimensional details but the dimetric presentation of assembly of most of the parts required in this work, and even the English language so he could present his work to hobbyists in other lands?are all developed as his hobby progressed.

I am building the steam shay using Shurline equipment. The directions are very clear, but I am having to redraw some of the directions into 3D in order to get the right slant on parts.

I am also looking for track and there is not enough information in the book. If you have any sources, please advise.

I am building a 7 1/4 scale live steam using this book and I find it very useful as I have no other plans to go by. Six years on still building 70% finnished.
