Synopses & Reviews

Review:

This is a serious text for people who take their pyrotechnics seriously.

Written in 1964 by the eminent Russian scientist I. I. Shidlovsky, the book was designed as a textbook to be used in colleges teaching chemistry. It immediately acquired worldwide attention and the reason is simple: it is the only textbook of its kind in the world.

Shidlovsky explains the work in the Preface: The book presents the general theoretical principles of pyrotechnics and modern methods of preparation and calculation of pyrotechnic compositions, and gives information on the properties of various types of pyrotechnic compositions.

There are twenty-three chapters, beginning with "General Concepts of Pyrotechnic Agents & Pyrotechnic Compositions" and ending with "Principles of Technology of Pyrotechnic Production". He covers illuminating compositions, photoflash mixtures, tracer compositions, flare compositions, incendiary compositions, smoke, colored smoke, solid fuels, ignition compositions, and rocket fuels. Along the way a great deal of information is given on fuels, oxidizers and binders, their characteristics, handling, etc.

This version of Principles of Pyrotechnics was prepared from original translations of the Russian text that were done by the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force. We compared each paragraph, each table, in both translations and selected the better text. Then we asked Dr. Ken Kosanke of PyroLabs Inc. to prepare an index from that text. The text, the 300 references, and the index have resulted in a magnificent textbook that every serious pyrotechnist will want in his library, and that will provide an easy-to-use reference source well into the future.

The ultimate reference source for the pyrotechnist who takes his work seriously.
