Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

When his father died, J. R. Ackerley was shocked to discover that he had led a secret life. And after Ackerley himself died, he left a surprise of his own--this coolly considered, unsparingly honest account of his quest to find out the whole truth about the man who had always eluded him in life. But Ackerley's pursuit of his father is also an exploration of the self, making "My Father and Myself" a pioneering record, at once sexually explicit and emotionally charged, of life as a gay man. This witty, sorrowful, and beautiful book is a classic of twentieth-century memoir.

Synopsis:

J.R. Ackerley's father was the Banana King, a successful importer of fruit and a bluff, hearty fellow — qualities little appreciated by his refined and literary son. On his death, however, he left a letter revealing that his life of respectable prosperity was a facade. Thus began what for Ackerley was an ongoing quest to comprehend a father who remained always just beyond his reach. My Father and Myself, described by its author as an "examining and self-examining book", was published only after Ackerley's own death. It was immediately recognized as a classic account, on the order of Edmund Gosse's Father and Son, of the relationships between parent and child.

Synopsis:

An unravelling of the hidden secrets of the author's family, which reveal fascinating insights into family relationships.
