I found this little gem at a used bookstore and really consider it to be a great graduation gift, or - better yet - the perfect book to give someone who is moving into an apartment for the first time.
I covers everything from an extensive list of emergency food substitutions to simple recipes to first aid to how to sort the laundry to how to know if you have just a common cold or something that needs to be investigated further - and tons of other stuff: truly, stuff that you would ask your mom (and still can, of course, it's just that at 2am she's probably in bed :)
Also, it is the only book I've ever found that can provide a substitution for egg - although, of course, I'm referring to egg for use in baking, not for, say, an omelette...
This book predates the Big Internet Revolution - probably most of the stuff you could look up on the Internet nowadays, but you would have to invest a lot of time in that and frankly, it's just nice to have a book in hand with which to look up this very practical advice and information.
I also like the spiral-bound format: very convenient!
