Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

A remarkable gallery of lavish photographs which elevate bridges from pieces of the roadway to pieces of art.

With 306 colorful pictures from 28 countries across 6 continents, Cortright awakens the eye and mind to the beauty of bridges.

These are lovingly composed and arranged photographs that give us not only the settings but the personalities of these bridges.

With its elegant photos and just the right amount of text to help you appreciate them, this book will appeal to anyone from an eight-year-old to a civil engineer.

To justify this book's title, Briding the World Cortight has extended his travels worldwide, collecting compelling images of bridges from six continents.

Book News Annotation:

Nicely designed in a smallish (9.5x8") format, this book presents color photos, with descriptive text, depicting bridges found 'round the world. It's clearly a labor of love and will be of interest to a broad audience of travellers and enthusiasts as well as engineers. The photos are dramatic and well composed, and the brief text is knowledgable and personable. The book is organized by bridge type: beam, masonry arch, metal arch, concrete arch, suspension, cable- stayed, and moving bridges. A final section of the author's personal favorites includes aqueducts and special bridges in his home state of Oregon.
