Publisher Comments:

Half of Hawaii's 8 million yearly tourists are first-timers, often unsure of which island to visit, where to stay, and what to choose to do from among hundreds of attractions, parks, and beaches. No Worries Hawaii, a companion book to the Sprout's adventure guides for each of the islands, comes to the rescue.

Readers first take an "armchair voyage," in which they visualize the type of vacation they'd like to have, what their interests are, and what type of surroundings they'd prefer. These likings are matched with what Hawaii has to offer. A clever but simple self-test allows readers to sort through Hawaii's assets — beaches, nightlife, trails, gardens, attractions, cultural sites, surfing, snorkeling — 36 categories in all, to determine which are important and which island is best.

In the second part of No Worries Hawaii, readers take their decisions from part one and receive all the practical and money-saving advice needed to book a vacation that makes the armchair voyage become a real one. Included also is a complete list of what to pack.

The third part of the book is full of tips on what to do — and what not to do — after arriving in the islands. Readers will deplane as kama'aina (locals), having the benefit the Sprout's twenty years of exploration. Sections include how to plan days to maximize fun and avoid hassle, finding free entertainment, and other cost-cutting options. Readers are advised on how to, and whether to, book tours (snorkeling, sailing, helicopter, horseback, etc.). The book's safety tips are a literal lifesaver, and the everyday advice on driving, hiking, and beach-going essential for a smooth vacation.

The meat of No Worries Hawaii is its Best Of section, a listing of Hawaii's top things to see and do — museums, rainforest hikes, snorkeling coves, walk-around beach towns, surfing spots, attractions, places to watch surfers, mountain bike trails, people-watching beaches, botanical gardens, peak hikes, short strolls to views, cultural sites, luxury resorts, volcano hikes, bird-watching forests, waterfalls, churches, tide pools, remote beaches, family beach parks, picnic grounds, and more. Taken together, the 50 categories neatly sum up the best of Hawaii. Readers can use these listings as a reference when they get to their chosen island. No Worries Hawaii is beautifully designed, complimented by more than 100 color photographs, and written concisely and with humor, making it as fun to read as it is useful.

Book News Annotation:

In addition to the usual maps, insider tourist tips, resources, and enticing color photos of the main Hawaiian islands, the guide includes a scorecard and self-test for determining vacation style and island by priorities: e.g., beginner snorkeling, family beaches, babe and hunk beaches, botanical gardens, hikes, and inspiring holy places. The Sprouts emphasize that Hawaii's best is what Nature offers for free, though other freebies are also listed. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Since this was highly recommended on Trip Advisor I ordered it before deciding where to go on our honeymoon. This guide is brimming with all kinds of good advice so nicely arranged it was a pleasure to use. Photos show off all the islands and Maui stood out as the one we wanted most to see. We wanted to relax at our resort but didn't want to miss exploring the volcano or Hana Highway. This guide organized us and we fit it all in and had a very satisfying romantic vacation. Well worth the purchase price and it also made a nice souvenir that we've tucked away for planning our next trip to a new island......Kauai.

For planning this guide was a must have. So many things we weren't aware of that these authors pointed out. We got max out of our visit, knew the ins and outs of reserving rooms and finding the places that were just our style. Sun, sand, surf, just what the doctor ordered, we got full value from our Maui/Kauai two week vacation.

My wife and I used another guidebook in the series from these same authors---The Big Island Trailblazer---on our last trip to the Big Island, and the dogeared text was the most valuable tool in the backpack. These people know what they are doing. They've gotten everything right with these guidebooks: readable type, user-friendly layout, sensible maps, lovely illustrative photos, practical advice, helpful features, and easy-to-figure out directions for any activity, from driving to biking to hiking to snorkeling. Plus the writing is unfailingly clear, helpful...and often downright witty. We're kind of semi-bewildered George Burns & Gracie Allen-type travelers, so these volumes are a blessing for us. It's a rare treat to find travel guidebooks that are not only information-packed, well-organized and thoughtfully-researched but also such a delight to read because of the stellar graphics and design and the delightful prose. Functional and fun. A two-punch knockout.

Now this new Hawaii overview book shows up at Powell's Books, and we're knocked out again. I can't imagine a better resource for planning a first trip to the islands or a more comprehensive re-visit. There's a self-test to suss out one's travel preferences and activity priorities that is subsequently connected to the best, most comprehensive "Best Of" listings we've ever seen. The result is extraordinarily useful information for trip planning and execution. It's quite an original and workable planning tool. Then there's plenty of practical advice that gives do-it-yourself types all they need for a Hawaiian vacation success. The color photos are stunning. I want to jump on a plane tomorrow.
