The author's first effort in this genre. Nonetheless, very authoritative and definitive on the plants it covers. Thoroughly covers all aspects including identification, which is paramount on the subject of wild food gathering. Primarily intended for the upper Midwest and Northeastern states, the information still applies wherever these plants are found. Well written; very readable as well as entertaining. The folksy style of the author leaves one feeling like one has just visited with a friend who happens to know everything about his subject.

This is a wonderful book. It is VERY practical and informative. It is one of the best identifying books I have ever used. The illustrations and photographs are very good, not leaving anything obscure. The author includes recipes and uses. And, to top that off, it is written in a warm and even humerous way as the author relates stories of his own experiences learning to forage and teach others. One story is how the author told someone that cattails were edible and as he was about to explain, the person grabbed a cattail and put the top "fluff" in his mouth and wondered how anyone could eat this stuff! I would give this book a top rating.
