Jack is back! In this third installment of our eclectic Asian detective, two unrelated murders merge against a background of Southern justice and horse racing as two detectives stage a race of their own in Louisville to save Big Easy dyke Dorene Gates.Set in the glitz and glamour of old money among some of Kentucky’s finest celebrities, the military has sent SSgt. Jack Vu to uncover the mysterious death of a young Air Force Lieutenant, her naked body snagged by a blind fisherman along the riverbank of the Ohio. The local police are called in and the death is being ruled a suicide. In a seemingly second unrelated murder, New Orleans’s detective, Bruce Hill, is called to Kentucky when his partner’s old high school flame, a famous jockey, is found murdered, in her own stable. Gates’ fingerprints are on the murder weapon and the local police discover a snip of hair inside Gate’s purse. Gates, saddled with a crime she says she didn’t commit, must rely on her two cohorts to set her free, who don’t exactly agree on things. In this tale of intrigue, racial tensions ignite as Louisville’s dark past comes back to haunt some of its residents. Vu and Hill must tread carefully if they plan on uncovering the secret. Hold on to your horses, and prepare for one wild ride down the track of life.

I listened to the CD. For a person that isn’t much of a mystery-reader, I found that I could stop listening, BUT couldn’t wait to turn it back on. The audio version was extremely well done, just like I was there. Congratulations to the writer and the audio readers.

As expected the author Doc Macomber does his research and development to combine a strong plot with plenty of characters to go around. Definitely something for everyone. After writing two preceeding books involving detective Jack, third time is the charm and makes this an unforgettable work. Easy read from chapter one all the way through even for me (a guy with a short attention span). This is a novel that will be compared to his previous works and will find itself at the top of the list. Doc throws away any formula and just writes a winner.
