Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Celebrated as a “Diva of the Demimonde [who writes] a love song to life on the shady side” (Katherine Dunn, Geek Love), Viva Las Vegas, the award-winning author of Magic Gardens and “The Last Days of My Left Breast,” returns with a collection of popular writings from her days as the editor of Exotic Magazine. A born evangelist who never lets the grass grow under her feet, Viva’s Gospels traverse red-lit Paris nights, rock ‘n’ roll’s backstages, New York City on 9/11, and the seedy wonderland of Portland’s underground.

Review:

“A perfect blend of sass, ass and crass.” Richard Meltzer, Aesthetics of Rock

Review:

“Viva Las Vegas is like Wonder Woman. She’s a woman of many powers — she can sing beautifully, dance seductively, and write the hell out of a magazine column. And like Wonder Woman, Viva looks great in tight blue shorts.” Kevin Sampsell, A Common Pornography

About the Author

Whether naked on stage at a dive bar in Portland, Oregon, or walking the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival, Viva Las Vegas brings passion to her performances and audiences to their feet.

Born and raised in the Midwest and a graduate of Williams College in Massachusetts, Viva has been a force in the arts for more than a decade, performing onstage as a singer, appearing in TV shows and more than a dozen films, and writing and interviewing for publications both local and national. Viva’s atypical resume includes Paranoid Park and First Kiss (films by Gus Van Sant); The Auteur (a 2008 James Westby film); and articles in The New York Times, Village Voice, Portland Monthly, and Exotic Magazine. Her Portland band, Coco Cobra and the Killers, has recorded two albums, and she is frequently interviewed as a spokesperson for strippers — her compassionate voice always at the ready to rock polite society.

Viva’s first book, Magic Gardens: The Memoirs of Viva Las Vegas released in the fall of 2009 (Dame Rocket Press) and explores her colorful meander from college to a career in stripping. The release also marked the one-year anniversary of her breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, part of which she chronicles in her award-winning article, “The Last Days of My Left Breast” (Portland Monthly, March 2009). The article is included in the “Apocrypha” section of her latest work, The Gospel According to Viva Las Vegas, which features articles and interviews from her days as the editor of Exotic Magazine.
