Nevada follows the story of a young transwoman living in NYC struggling to come to terms with her gender identity while balancing life with her full-time partner and job at an independent bookstore. The protagonist, Maria, has socially transitoned to female but struggles to recognize her failings in the other areas of her life, and events quickly unfold to force Maria to examine the person that she is and how her gender identity informed that creation. Maria is one of those characters you're always rooting for but can't help being a little exasperated with. As a transwoman, I found the work very accurately portrayed struggles I have had in being trans, and it came to me at a particularly relevant time in my own self-examination as I sought to understand who I was because of my gender identity and who I am absent of it. It's a light, brisk read with a stream of consciousness writing style that works well for the author, Imogen Binnie. Highly recommended, not just for transgender individuals, but for anyone looking to understand life as a trans person in a more complete, two-sides-to-the-coin sorta way.
