Publisher Comments:

Picket Line is the Xeric award winning graphic novel by Breena Wiederhoeft. It tells the story of Beatrice, a Midwestern girl living in northern California, who gets caught in the middle of a mounting battle between environmentalists and an unpopular land developer. In order to soothe her restless craving to belong, she must pick a side between her well-meaning boss Rex, and a growing mass of protestors fighting to save their treasured Redwoods. In this in-between state, Picket Line sets up camp, and its characters take their stand.

Picket Line just got me hooked on graphic novels, specifically in this genre. Even without reading the thoughts and conversations between characters, you can empathize with them through their joys and hardships. Their facial expressions are emotional but clear and simple to immediately feel. The details Breena puts into each background, especially the trees, really shows the work put into the entire book. Not only are the illustrations captivating, but the story as well urged me to read it all in practically one sitting. At times it's funny, other times it serious, and throughout it all it's inspiring to read a genuine story of a girl who experiences that first "jumping out of the nest" adventure so many us of can relate to. I know I'll pick it up again and again for its charm, visuals, and storyline.

Breena Wiederhoeft's first graphic novel is amazing. Beautifully drawn and lovingly told, I sped through to the end and then had to go back and re-read it a second time, just to get all the nuance. No doubt it'll make a mark in Portland's comic scene.
