Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Internationally bestselling author Häkan Nesser makes his U.S. debut with this riveting tale of murder and suspense that reveals the deep humanity of the characters portrayed even as it sends chills up the spine.

Chief Inspector Van Veeteren is called to the sleepy coastal town of Kalbringen to assist the local police in the investigation of two recent ax murders. Soon the case turns from bad to worse when another body turns up and one of Van Veeteren's colleagues, a young female detective, disappears without a trace. Now Van Veeteren must find the killer, and, it is hoped, his colleague, before anyone else comes to harm. Riveting and intellectually satisfying, Borkmann's Point unfolds like a chess match where each move could prove deadly.

"No reader of hard-boiled crime fiction should miss the Scandinavians, and Nesser immediately vaults to near-Mankell status. Let's hope Borkmann's Point...is only the first of a steady stream of Nesser imports." Booklist (Starred Review)

Out of the surprising large pantheon of modern Swedish mystery writers, Hakan Nesser and his Inspector Van Veeteren books stand out for rich characterization and compelling storylines. Like Stephen King, Nesser makes you like the characters, then turns the monsters loose, though in his books the murderers are turned loose on the public at large, and you, like the inspector and his team, have no idea what will happen next. Nesser has a very quick way of getting to the heart of the story, or a character, that seems very real and interesting. In this book, a serial killer is assuredly one of the members of a small coastal village, yet none fit the puzzle the police are faced with. Van Veeteren is bought in to consult, with his usual stand-offish way of approaching the case, and interacting with his fellow officers. A fun character & a great read!
