About the Author

Katherine Boo is a staff writer at The New Yorker and a former reporter and editor for The Washington Post. Her reporting has been awarded a Pulitzer Prize, a MacArthur "Genius" grant, and a National Magazine Award for Feature Writing. For the last decade, she has divided her time between the United States and India. This is her first book.

What a starkly beautiful tale of life, death, and hope in a most improbable setting. Katherine boo does not sugar coat the horrors of life in a Mumbai Slum, yet one sees through her eyes the possibilities that open up, albeit fleetingly, for Abdul, Kalu, Sunil and other young children there. Boo rightly says that, "powerless individuals blamed other powerless individuals for what they lacked;" when they could have so easily blamed higher powers.

A must read for anybody who cares about poverty in the world and anybody who has ignored poverty all their lives.

IN FUTURE AUTHORS SHOULD ADD A NUANCE ABOUT THE ANCIENT INFLUENCE OF INDIA TOO..THIS WILL ADD MORE DEPTH WHEN WRITING ABOUT INDIA .INDIA IS THE MOST INFLUENTIAL AND OLDEST CULTURE IN ASIA..AND CERTAINLY VERY INFLUENTIAL IN THE WORLD IN ANCIENT TIMES..
SOME HISTORIANS DRAW CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THE DRAVIDIANS IN INDIA AND THE PHAROAHS OF EGYPT AND EVEN THE ANCIENT CIVILIZATION IN SOUTH AMERICA....

This is an unforgettable book. I have been thinking about this book daily since I finished it over a week ago. You may wish it were fiction, but unfortunately, the characters and conditions are all too real. This book is the best book I have read yet in the "non-fiction narrative" genre. The author spent three years living among the residents of the Annawadi slum so unfortunately, it will be a long wait until her next book, if she researches it to the same extent as this one.
