Howard Cruse’s graphic novel “Stuck Rubber Baby” is a coming of age story and a coming out story set in the American South during the civil rights movement and before women’s and gay liberation. It’s about finding oneself and building community; discovering the power of family, friendship, love, and sex; living every day at the intersection between the personal and the political. Through wonderfully detailed drawings that are stylized yet realistic, it captures the mood of a very particular time and place. There are no stereotypical heroes and few stereotypical villains in this story; it’s about ordinary people trying to do the right thing. Knowing that even small actions can have huge consequences, they’re forced to choose between “the price that can be exacted when you look bigotry too squarely in the eye . . .[and] the price that gets paid when you don’t.” If you loved “Fun Home” or “Persepolis,” this book is for you.
