For those of you who are (as I am) hopelessly addicted to Diana Gabaldon's novels in the Outlander series, this book is a must-read.

This book fills in the friendship between Jamie Fraser and Lord John Grey from Voyager, the 3rd novel in the series. At one point near the end of Voyager Jamie says "Oh, it's only that I ken Lord John; he's a friend of mine." I can remember distinctly when I first read this line, I was completely bemused. The words didn't make sense. While Jamie and Lord John had certainly been acquaintances and spent much time together, nothing had happened to lead one to say they were truly friends.

One other point: There's a chapter in The Scottish Prisoner where an event is told from the viewpoint of Jaime. Later in another novel, An Echo In The Bone, the same event is told from the viewpoint of another character. Powerful writing!

The Outlander series is deep, deep, complicated and complex, many-layered. [My opinion only, of course.] I can scarcely wait for Written With My Heart's Own Blood, the next in the series, due out in 2014.

If you haven't read series yet, start at the beginning, which is titled Outlander. There has never been a more benign and fulfilling drug.
