Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

They promised Meredith nine years of safety, but only gave her three.

Her father was supposed to be locked up until Meredith turned eighteen. She thought she had time to grow up, get out, and start a new life. But Meredith is only fifteen, and today her father is coming home from prison.

Today her time has run out.

Review:

"Beautifully written and painfully real. Laura Wiess has crafted a gripping story that is heart-rending — and important, with a capital 'I'." Barbara Delinsky, New York Times bestselling author of Flirting with Pete

Review:

"Such a Pretty Girl is deep and ravishing, dark and true. In the character of Meredith, Laura Wiess has created a girl to walk alongside Harper Lee's Scout and J. D. Salinger's Phoebe. Read this novel, and you will be changed forever." Luanne Rice, New York Times bestselling author

Review:

"Such a Pretty Girl hooked me on page one and Laura Wiess's masterful prose kept me turning the pages. This is the first book in a very long time that made me say, 'Wish I'd written this.'" Ellen Hopkins, bestselling author of Crank

Review:

"...Wiess' story is a page-turner that ultimately sends a startling message of empowerment that, while improbable, is extremely satisfying." Booklist

Review:

"Wiess has created a spunky heroine — tough, darkly humorous, yet achingly vulnerable....[A] nail-biter of an ending. Gusty and effective thriller..." Kirkus Reviews

Review:

"This novel is perfectly paced, the momentum never slowing as it races toward the inevitable showdown." VOYA

Review:

"This tale strikes just the right balance between hope and despair, and Meredith's will to survive and ability to take action in the face of her terror are an inspiration." KLIATT

Synopsis:

This haunting, emotionally gripping tale is the story of a 15-year-old girl who must defend herself against her abusive father. Suspenseful, and emotionally shattering, the novel captures a young woman's painful fight for survival — and her journey back to herself.

About the Author

Laura Wiess is the author of the critically acclaimed novels Such a Pretty Girl, chosen as one of the ALA's 2008 Best Books for Young Adults and 2008 YALSA Quick Picks for Reluctant Readers, and Leftovers. This is my absolute favorite book. EVER. Laura Wiess has a way with words that make you experience how Meredith is feeling, and the struggle she goes through dealing with her father returning home. I adore how she portrays Meredith's mother as almost a villain by being on her husband's side after he raped her daughter, and even going as far as blaming her. As a writer myself, I have trouble using real-time, but Wiess makes the transition from day-to-day flawless and impeccable. In the cover of her next book, Leftovers, she says she is working on a new MTV book, and I can't wait for it to come out.

I absolutely devoured this book. It's one of the most un-put-down-able books I've ever read. It's a nail-biting, heart-pounding, unflinching blitzkrieg of emotion and terror and, ultimately, hope and triumph. Meredith is strong and smart and vulnerable and stunningly brave. Wiess's prose is fast-paced, spare and lovely. A phenomenal read from a very talented author.

Ok, I loved this book but i just have to point out one major flaw before I start my review:
They promised Meredith NINE years of safety, but only gave her THREE. Then they go on to say that she's FIFTEEN. Fifteen minus three is twelve. they say he was suppose to be locked up for nine years, but then they also say her father was supposed to be locked up until Meredith turned eighteen. I don't know about you but I'm pretty sure twelve plus nine doesn't equal eighteen
Other then that though I loved this book. I agree it may not have gone as deep into the struggle of dealing with a father who raped you but I also think that this book had more to do with the over coming it then the actually dealing with it. Some of the characters may have lacked the kind of depth some people look for in a story but I had no problem with it. I would definably tell you to read this book
