Bethany Moreton: IMG Culture War on Aisle 5? Wal-Mart, Evangelicals, and "Extreme Capitalism"

"In the 'culture wars' narrative of the Republican ascendancy, this slippage represents the greatest con in recent history: while you rush to defend marriage or protect the unborn, please pay no attention to the financier behind the curtain." Continue »

"ONCE UPON A TIME"

IS TIMELESS

Etienne de Brabant is brokenhearted. His wife has died in childbirth, leaving him alone with an infant daughter he cannot bear to name. But before he abandons her for king and court, he brings a second child to be raised alongside her, a boy whose identity he does not reveal.

The girl, La Cendrillon, and the boy, Raoul, pass sixteen years in the servants' care until one day a very fine lady arrives with her two daughters. The lady has married La Cendrillon's father, and her arrival changes their lives.

When an invitation to a great ball reaches the family, La Cendrillon's new stepmother will make a decision with far-reaching effects. Her choice will lead La Cendrillon and Raoul toward their destiny — a choice that will challenge their understanding of family, test their loyalty and courage, and, ultimately, teach them who they are.

Synopsis:

A nameless baby is left in the care of servants following her mother's death and her father's desertion. The child's tendency to sleep in the fireplace earns her the name RLa CendrillonS in this retelling of the classic fairy tale. Original.

A wonderful book that gives a whole new and wonderful twist on a old fairy tale. It follows the life of Cedrillon (French version of Cinderella) through her life growing up after her father abandonded her. It also has her childhood friend and "brother" Raoul, who was brought to Cedrillon's father's estate to raised along side her. Then 15 years later, her father has been foced to re-marry and has shipped his new wife off to the estate three days travel from the royal palace. Without telling her that she has a new stepdaughter. A wonderful made remake, I found it much more injoyable than the orginal versions I have heard. It only took me two days to read, I could't put it down!
