In this contemporary story of brothers, Alexander and Robert both have completely different lives from one another. Chris Lynch’s novel is about the story of Alexander who is a misfit in life, but is very unique in his own kind of way.
The misfit and the main character, Alexander, is the prime example of that lonely kid who gets bullied mercilessly in school. But he can’t even get away from his bullies at home, as his older brother Robert teases and mocks him constantly.
Of course, Robert is the polar opposite of Alexander. He is the star player of the soccer team, he has a job and he has a girlfriend. Everything that Alexander does not have. To make matters worse Robert points it out to him every single day, making Alexander feel like his older brother is better than him in every single way.
The story is unexpectedly told by the antagonist in the book, Robert. In the story, he lets the reader know what kind of person Alexander is and how his mind works. Robert sees his brother as weird and interesting person.
One part in the story is a prime example of when a last person’s last straw finally breaks. From being kicked off his brother’s soccer team being verbally abused from his brother, that’s when the straw finally broke. He became friends with a guy named Harry who had a reputation for being a bad influence in school. Soon after becoming friends with Harry, Alexander started to stay out all night and sneak around with his friends, which was nothing like his normal behavior. This eventually lead to a collision with law enforcement and his path was looking like it was heading in the wrong direction.
This novel is meant for young adult readers. I believe some students will be able to relate to Alexander and have a connection with him throughout the story. Anyone who wants to read an intriguing book about how teenage bullying can effect an adolescent so much, this would be a great novel for them to invest their times with.
