About the Author

Rick Woodford operated Dog Stew, a company that produced nutritional, homemade dog food for dogs in the Pacific Northwest. In full disclosure, I've known Rick for about 12 years now. During this time I've found that he is a natural teacher. There's never a question he doesn't want to help you answer. But he's not going to just do something for you. He'll ensure that you know how and why something works the way it does, and that you can repeat the same process later on your own.

This book is an extension of that, but it includes his heart. Often while working together the conversation would veer onto our pets. When I adopted my cocker spaniel five years ago she was very sick. The vet diagnosed pancreatitis but gave no suggestions other than to feed her expensive vet-provided dog food. At a loss I spoke to Rick. Though we lived out of the area for his dog stew, he explained what my dog needed to eat, and even suggested how to find a high-quality store brand food if I could not make my own. Rick had me start out by feeding her well-cooked rice, then add in chicken, and later on green beans. I followed Rick's advice, and before long was able to transition her to a grain-free, low fat dog food. She's been healthy ever since, not a single trip to the vet other than for her yearly check up. As it turns out, she may not have had pancreatitis, but simply a corn allergy. Rick also helped my sister with her dog, and she's the healthiest she's ever been on her modified dog stew recipes.

So when purchased Rick's book I knew it would be something special. I was not only not disappointed but astounded. He not only gives you easy to follow recipes, he teaches you to create your own, instructs you in modifying it to fit your dog's unique needs, and gives invaluable tips to train your dog too. This is a beautiful, thorough book. You can go all out and cook for your dog, you can choose store bought foods with better info. It's all there in easy-to-follow, easy-to-navigate lists.

Simply put, "Feed Your Best Friend Better" is the gold standard for feeding your pet.
