When longtime illustrator and lover of power tools Lauren Scheuer was looking for a project, she got the idea to raise backyard chickens. Her husband and teenage daughter looked on incredulously as coop sketches and chicken-raising books filled their New England home. But when the chicks arrived, the whole family fell in love with the bundles of fluff and the wild adventures began. andlt;BRandgt;andlt;BRandgt;andlt;Iandgt;Once Upon a Flock: Life with My Soulful Chickens andlt;/Iandgt;stars Scheuerand#8217;s backyard chickensand#8212;with their big personalities, friendships, rivalries, and secretsand#8212;and the flockand#8217;s guardian, Marky the terrier. When Lucyand#8217;s nesting instinct leads andlt;BRandgt;andlt;BRandgt;Lauren to act as a chicken midwife of sorts, Lauren hatches a chick in her home. And when Lucyand#8217;s best friend Hatsy falls ill, Lauren finds an unlikely friend for Lucy in a chicken named Pigeon, who requires an emergency bath and blow-dry. Enthusiastically immersing herself in the world of her flock, Lauren discovers that love, loss, passion, and resilience are not only parts of the human experience, but of the chicken experience as well. Throughout it all, Lauren documents the laughter and drama of her flockand#8217;s adventures with her own whimsical photos and illustrations. At once humorous, poignant, and informative, andlt;Iandgt;Once Upon a Flock andlt;/Iandgt;is a feathered tale like no other.

Review:

"Though readers may not associate chickens with empathy, this delightful book will likely change such opinions. After Scheuer, a children's book illustrator who writes the blog Scratch and Peck, decided to introduce chicks to her rural Massachusetts backyard, the rewards of raising them to adulthood (with her husband and teenage daughter) far outpaced her minimal expectations, offering 'hilarity and drama and life.' Her keen eye for subtle interactions enabled her to clearly delineate the distinct characters of Hatsy, Little White, Lucy, and Jenny, compelling the reader to invest in each bird, and in their ups and downs almost as intensely as Scheuer did. With frequent examples of selflessness — a chicken slowing its pace to match an ill comrade, or staying outside in the terrifying nighttime darkness to keep another company — the author pre-empts any criticism that she's just anthropomorphized her beloved animals. This must-have for animal lovers also features Scheuer's drawings, which along with photographs, enhance the endearing text. Illus. Agent: Laurie Abkemeier, DeFiore and Company." Synopsis:

This delightful memoir about life with a spirited, sometimes reckless flock of backyard chickens—inspired by the author’s popular blog, “Scratch and Peck”—includes color photographs and imaginative illustrations throughout.

When longtime illustrator and lover of power tools Lauren Scheuer was looking for something new to build, she got the idea to raise backyard chickens, which would necessitate a fun coop-building project. As soon as her newborn chicks arrived in the mail her whole family fell in love with the little bundles of fluff. Not just colorful lawn ornaments, the birds proved to have endearing individual personalities—and wild adventures ensued.

Once Upon a Flock tells the whimsical, wonderful stories of Lauren’s backyard chickens, their friendships, rivalries, and secrets. Lauren’s flock includes Hatsy, the little dynamo; Lil’White, the evil Orpington; and Pigeon, the fixer-upper chicken. We meet Lucy, a special needs hen who bonds with Lauren and invites her into an intimate friendship. And we witness the transformation of Lauren’s dog Marky from chicken-predator to proud watchdog. By enthusiastically immersing herself in the flock, Lauren discovers that love, loss, passion and resilience are not only parts of the human experience, but of the chicken experience as well.

Throughout the book, Scheuer documents the humor and drama of the flock’s adventures with beautiful photos and charming illustrations. At once humorous, poignant, informative, and quirky, Once Upon a Flock is a feathered tale like no other.

My 12 year old daughter totally loved this! (I think she must have read it after bedtime when I wasn't looking because of how soon she finished.) This book is totally fun because of the pictures, illustrations and observations of the author. If you are crazy about chickens or want to explore with your kids, this is a fabulous book for you. If you want to find out about what feed, illnesses, breeds and how to take care of chickens, you will want to look elsewhere. I recommend this creative, cute, fun book to all chicken loving kids and kids at heart.
