Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Fiction. Literary Nonfiction. AN OLD JUNKER is a rambling multi-genre first book—a blognovel, a proto-memoir, a novel of ideas, a coming-of-age narrative, a meta-parody whose rambling plot savages Dave Eggers and Jonathan Franzen and Richard Serra, denounces foodieism, and insists that Kierkegaard is Post-Avant. Along the way Junker details his day-to-day principles as an editor...and the agony of searching for a successor. Plus: candid snaps from his iPhone!

About the Author

Howard Junker was born in Port Washington, NY, a town Fitzgerald called East Egg in The Great Gatsby. Educated at Horace Greeley, Canterbury, Amherst, Stanford, and the University of San Francisco, he bought his doctorate of divinity by mail for $35 from the Clayton Theological Institute. After serving in the Naval Air Reserve, he began freelancing for many magazines, including Architectural Digest, Art in America, Artforum, The Nation, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, and Vogue. In 1985 he founded ZYZZYVA, a journal of West Coast writers and artists, editing 90 issues before his retirement at the end of 2010. He lives in San Francisco with his wife, with whom he goes to the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market early Saturday mornings.
