Synopses & Reviews

Synopsis:

In this hard-hitting book, journalist Nikiforuk exposes the disastrous environmental, social, and political costs of the Canadian tar sands and argues forcefully for change. b&w photos.

Synopsis:

Winner of the 2009 Rachel Carson Environment Book Award, from the Society of Environmental Journalists

Canada has one third of the worlds oil source; it comes from the bitumen in the oil sands of Alberta. Advancements in technology and frenzied development have created the worlds largest energy project in Fort McMurray where, rather than shooting up like a fountain in the deserts of Saudi Arabia, the sticky bitumen is extracted from the earth. Providing almost 20 percent of Americas fuel, much of this dirty oil is being processed in refineries in the Midwest. This out-of-control megaproject is polluting the air, poisoning the water, and destroying boreal forest at a rate almost too rapid to be imagined. In this hard-hitting book, journalist Andrew Nikiforuk exposes the disastrous environmental, social, and political costs of the tar sands and argues forcefully for change.

If you're interested in understanding the development of oil sands and want an overview that presents factual information about how it impacts energy policy (in Canada and the United States) and globalization, you should read this book. It provides valuable information about the technology itself and economic, social and environmental consequences. As a scholar undertaking study of this industry and its impacts on the economy and politics in the United States, I discovered early on that finding information about oil sands development is not easy. Maps of pipeline systems in existence and proposed were one of the most valuable contributions of this book. I continue to refer to them as I further investigate this industry.

Take two dishes and place them on your desk. Fill one with adjectives and adverbs which immediately bring to mind associations things often considered evil or wrong, even though in themselves the thing or idea is benign or ambiguous. Fill the other bowl with wide sweeping generalizations and some indistinct segues between actual quotes and random unattributed ideas. Next pick a topically hot subject that most of society is knowledgeably ignorant about but vaguely aware of. Mix together with the skill of a Gamey Bird newspaper trained journalist (Car crash on the front page. If there was none that week, dig one out of the files.) and you will come up with a close approximation to Nikiforuk’s Tar Sands.

I got to page 87 and could go no further.
