Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Woodhouse's prime position as commander of the Allied Military Mission to the Greek guerillas in German-occupied Greece enabled him to write the definitive history of the Greek civil war--an account of the turning point in Communist fortunes in Europe that has achieved the status of a classic. He analyzes the characters, ideologies, and events behind one of the longest and most bitter civil wars of modern times. With an Introduction by Richard Clogg.

Book News Annotation:

Written by the commander of the Allied Military Mission to the Greek Resistance fighting the Germans, this 1976 work analyzes the politics of the Greek resistance movement during World War II from a conservative vantage. Woodhouse portrays the Greek peasants that supported the communist guerillas as uneducated, superstitious, and deluded by unscrupulous leaders. He discusses the political rifts that resulted in the Greek Civil War and the military dictatorship that was to rule Greece until 1974. In addition, significant attention is paid to the military history of the conflict.
