Publisher Comments:

Travel connects people with people. It helps us fit more comfortably and compatibly into a shrinking world. And it inspires creative new solutions to persistent problems facing our nation. We can’t understand our world without experiencing it. Traveling as a Political Act helps us take that first step.

There’s more to travel than good-value hotels, great art, and tasty cuisine. Americans who “travel as a political act” can have the time of their lives and come home smarter—with a better understanding of the interconnectedness of today’s world and just how our nation fits in.

In his new book, acclaimed travel writer Rick Steves explains how to travel more thoughtfully—to any destination. He shares a series of field reports from Europe, Central America, Asia, and the Middle East to show how his travels have shaped his politics and broadened his perspective.

This is a series of chapter-long travelogues on the themes of getting to know people of different cultures. Steves's suggestions are what you'd expect if you've watched his show--talk with people in the places you're traveling, stop and sit awhile at a little restaurant or cafe, try to learn about a country from the people who live there. Steves does a pretty good job of articulating some of his dilemmas while traveling--the difficulty of reconciling national security with an appreciate for others' autonomy, for example. The photos are plentiful and the book, printed on heavy stock, feels substantial. What it's not is a manifesto; rather, it's a set of related narratives.

An inspiring book on how educational & thoughtful travel broadens our lives. Made me aware of how our world has become very connected. I highly recommend reading Rick Steves' "Travel as a Political Act". He takes you through Europe, Central America, Asia & the Mid East in ways you never even thought of.

Even if you can't physically travel, it is wonderful arm chair travel with purpose. I felt like a student studying the world. Definitely 5 stars out of 5.
