Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Martin Gardner has entertained the world with his puzzles for decades and inspired countless mathematicians and scientists. As he rounds out another decade, his colleagues pay him tribute with this special collection that contains contributions from some of the most respected puzzlemasters, magicians, and mathematicians, including John H. Conway, William R. Gosper, Ed Pegg, Jr., Roger Penrose, Raymond Smullyan, Peter Winkler, and others.

Book News Annotation:

Martin Gardiner (now 94) is well-known for his "Mathematical Games" column, which ran in Scientific American from 1957 to 1982. Demaine (computer science, Massachusetts Institute of Technology) introduces 25 articles by some of those who were influenced by his entertaining introduction to recreational mathematics and magic. Following a Gardner biography and bibliography, many types of puzzles are covered with illustrations including logic puzzles, puzzles/games that arrange pieces into a particular structure, mazes, computer-assisted mosaics, and historical brainteasers. Gardner, a leading critic of pseudoscience, is shown with an improved version of the Hunter rope trick. The book is a selection of the Scientific American Book Club.
