Publisher Comments:

No home is complete without this one-of-a-kind encyclopedia! For more than thirty years, people have relied on the thousands of recipes, detailed how-to instructions, and personal advice provided in this definitive classic. It is the most complete source of step-by-step information about growing, processing, cooking, and preserving homegrown foods from garden, orchard, field, or barnyard. This book is so basic, so thorough, so reliable, that it deserves a place in every home whether country, city, or in between. Carla Emery started writing The Encyclopedia of Country Living in 1969 during the back-to-the-land movement of that time. She continued to add content and refine the information over the years ad the book went from a self-published mimeographed document to a book published by Bantam and then Sasquatch. The 10th Edition reflects the most up-to-date and the most personal version of the book that became Carla Emerys life work. It is the original manual of basic country skills that have proved essential and necessary for people living in the country and the city, and everywhere in between. The practical advice in this exhaustive reference tool includes how to cultivate a garden, buy land, bake bread, raise farm animals, make sausage, can peaches, milk a goat, grow herbs, churn butter, build a chicken coop, catch a pig, cook on a wood stove, and much, much more.

Synopsis:

The most complete source of information available about growing, processing, cooking, and preserving homegrown foods from the garden or field, this revised and updated edition of the classic text is an indispensable resource on country living. Illustrated.

No home, whether in the country, the city, or somewhere in between, should be without this one-of-a-kind encyclopedia — the most complete source of information available about growing, processing, cooking, and preserving homegrown foods from the garden, orchard, field, or barnyard. First written at the height of the 1960s back-to-the-land movement, the book has been continually revised, updated, and expanded, and has grown from a self-published, mimeographed document to an exhaustive reference of more than one million words, 2,000+ recipes, and over 1,500 mail order sources. Emerys personal advice, reflections, and anecdotes ensure that this incredibly detailed, diverse reference is as enjoyable as it is useful.

I came across this book at the age of 19, with out a Mother it taught me everything except how to find this vast book store name Powell's . I lost my first copy of The Encyclopedia of Country Living ,by Carla Emery. I personally think it was stolen.I thought I'd die. Then two miracles happened.
Then I found Powell's ---Not only did Powell's have it but they had the new version, which by the way is on the way to the top for best survival book. So, I missed 25 years of noodle making, homemade mayonnaise, how to butcher a chicken, homemade soap. I make the best homemade pickles but I can enjoy my own homemade cocoa and try to read a whole city block of Powell's Books.

This is an excellent reference for those who wish to live a more remote subsistance type lifestyle. Unlike most books of this kind this book is packed with real relevant information.

I have kept Carla's self-published 1977 edition close to hand for 30 years. It is a great book that has guided me through many wonderful experiments in country living. This year all 3 of my grown children will get a copy of "Carla Emery" for Christmas.
