Magical Materials to Weave: Blending Traditional & Innovative Yarns
Synopses & Reviews
Based on expert weaver Lotte Dalgaards own experiments with color, pleating, and other fabric qualities, this straightforward guide helps anyone share in the pleasure and play with these magical materials. Making some of the tacit knowledge explicit, this is a workshop in book form for any weaver who wants to know more about new yarns. Expert advice and practical knowledge is imparted alongside detailed descriptions of the character of the textile materials, threads, textures, and the handle and drape of the fabrics. Transforming these fabrics into garments is made possible with the projects, which include a blouse, a scarf, a poncho, and a jacket. A helpful list of yarn suppliers, a shrinkage chart, and dozens of illustrative photographs and diagrams round out this beautiful guide to weaving fabric.
This book is for weavers who want to learn innovative techniques that blend traditional and high-tech yarns on multi-shaft looms into unique material. Highly respected weaver Lotte Dalgaard worked for over ten years developing inventive hand-loomed fabric with attractive pleats, folds, frills, and crinkles. She worked closely with fashion designer Ann Schmidt, who took Dalgaard's pioneering fabrics and shaped them into garments—without cutting. The results are fascinating and set a whole new style of hand-woven fashion. Loom-formed textiles are exciting because the cloth becomes the protagonist, not simply a backdrop for the pattern-cutting design skills. Dalgaard now shares her secrets in this straightforward guidebook so all weavers can share in the pleasure and play with magical materials.
