Leadership and the New Science: Discovering Order in a Chaotic World

by Margaret J Wheatley

Leadership and the New Science: Discovering Order in a Chaotic World Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

First published in 1992, Margaret Wheatley’s Leadership and the New Science revolutionized the concept of organizational management. Applying recent scientific discoveries in biology, chemistry, quantum physics, and chaos theory to organizations, Wheatley showed that in the world of business, as in the natural world, change is not just inevitable but desirable because it offers new opportunities for growth and productivity. In this new edition of her classic text, Wheatley provides examples of nonlinear networks and organizations that are flourishing in the modern world. Explaining why numerous companies that use self-organizing dynamics — such as eBay and various Internet search engines — are all prospering, Wheatley reinforces the implications of her groundbreaking work and shows her work's ongoing value. Provocative yet empowering, Leadership and the New Science helps readers navigate a rapidly changing world with grace and courage.

Book News Annotation:

Wheatley describes some recent discoveries in scientific fields such as biology, chaos theory, and quantum physics and explains how understandings gleaned from this "new science" may be applied to the world of organizations and management. The emphasis throughout is on creating organizations that are adaptive, creative, and resilient in times of chaos. The third edition features a new chapter in which the author reflects on lessons learned from recent news stories. Wheatley has been a management professor and consultant since 1973. This book will blow your hair back, especially if you have ever been part of a "change initiative" in your work life. Meg Wheatley's observations and her clear style make you want to slap your forehead and say "Why didn't I think of that?" At the same time she challenges her readers to take the action and responsibility needed to move forward with a new world view that throws out the old mechanistic way of thinking and declares that humans and their organizations are "whole systems" and operate just the same as ecological and cosmic systems. A great read.
