Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

In this 1996 Minnesota Book Award winner, Nerburn draws the reader deep into the world of an Indian elder known only as Dan--a world of Indian towns, white roadside cafes, and abandoned roads that swirl with the memories of the Ghost Dance and Sitting Bull.

Book News Annotation:

Nerburn recounts his travels with a Lakota elder whose identity he has pledged not to reveal, and the stories the old man told him. He provides a new forward to the 2001 edition. There is neither index nor bibliography.

Synopsis:

In this 1996 Minnesota Book Award winner, Kent Nerburn draws the reader deep into the world of an Indian elder known only as Dan. Its a world of Indian towns, white roadside cafes, and abandoned roads that swirl with the memories of the Ghost Dance and Sitting Bull. Readers meet vivid characters like Jumbo, a 400-pound mechanic, and Annie, an 80-year-old Lakota woman living in a log cabin. Threading through the book is the story of two men struggling to find a common voice. Neither Wolf nor Dog takes readers to the heart of the Native American experience. As the story unfolds, Dan speaks eloquently on the difference between land and property, the power of silence, and the selling of sacred ceremonies. This edition features a new introduction by the author. “This is a sobering, humbling, cleansing, loving book, one that every American should read.” — Yoga Journal

Liquidsun, November 26, 2010 (view all comments by Liquidsun)
The author gives an honest and genuine account of his journey with others on a Native American Reservation reminding us just how different the cultures look at things, how they view life and what the meaning behind 'simple' things can be. There's depth and delight in each chapter. Richness of texture and poignant portrayals of lives coming together in a journey of exploration and knowledge. Have you ever wanted to walk in another's shoes? To know their views, to understand their journey? This book will permit you to feel what it is to be different, to try to make of life an experience you will enjoy. This book gives you the full scope of what it is to live in another's shoes. How life can be seen from two different points of view and yet still reach a place we can both share. Take a journey you will never forget!
