Publisher Comments:

Eckhart Tolle is emerging as one of today's most inspiring teachers. In The Power of Now, already a word-of-mouth bestseller in Canada, the author describes his transition from despair to self-realization soon after his 29th birthday. Tolle took another ten years to understand this transformation, during which time he evolved a philosophy that has parallels in Buddhism, relaxation techniques, and meditation theory but is also eminently practical.

In The Power of Now he shows readers how to recognize themselves as the creators of their own pain, and how to have a pain-free existence by living fully in the present. Accessing the deepest self, the true self, can be learned, he says, by freeing ourselves from the conflicting, unreasonable demands of the mind and living "present, fully and intensely, in the Now."

Synopsis:

Much more than simple principles and platitudes, The Power of Now takes readers on an inspiring spiritual journey to find their true and deepest self and reach the ultimate in personal growth and spirituality: the discovery of truth and light.

Synopsis:

Much more than simple principles and platitudes, The Power of Now takes readers on an inspiring spiritual journey to find their true and deepest self and reach the ultimate in personal growth and spirituality: the discovery of truth and light. In the first chapter, Tolle introduces readers to enlightenment and its natural enemy, the mind. He awakens readers to their role as a creator of pain and shows them how to have a pain-free identity by living fully in the present. The journey is thrilling, and along the way, the author shows how to connect to the indestructible essence of our Being, "the eternal, ever-present One Life beyond the myriad forms of life that are subject to birth and death." Only after regaining awareness of Being, liberated from Mind and intensely in the Now, is there Enlightenment.

About the Author

Eckhart Tolle was born in Germany, where he spent the first thirteen years of his life. After graduating from the University of London, he was a research scholar and supervisor at Cambridge University. At age twenty-nine a profound spiritual transformation virtually dissolved his old identity and radically changed the course of his life.

The next few years were devoted to understanding, integrating and deepening that transformation, which marked the beginning of an intense inward journey.

For the past ten years, Eckhart has been a counselor and spiritual teacher. Through this book, his teaching is now available throughout the world. He is currently traveling extensively bringing not only his teaching but his presence to a growing number of audiences. He has lived in Vancouver, British Columbia, since 1996.

This book has a very simple power to change your whole perspective. If you want to get caught in the trappings and procedures of a myriad of disciplines, it won't work for you. If you want masters, and idols, and levels of spiritual accomplishment, this isn't the approach for you. If you are ready to let go of the bs and experience something true, read this.

There is some truth in what Tolle writes but his understanding is incomplete and suggests he is niavely unaware of his ignorance or trying to exploit the ignorance of others. In any case, I do not find the instuction of a true master in the material I have been exposed to. He talks about the achievement of enlightenment but the third step, or as the Buddhist say, the third noble truth, is absent: the way to end suffering. This is where the true master's value is; in directing the student to a direct understanding of how to traverse the path from suffering to the realization of the end of suffering. It seems as if Mr Tolle is hoping the reader/student/listener will get lucky. Perhaps he has or perhaps he is exploiting the teachings of a true master. I believe he is setting himself up as another trap, one he may even be caught in. At any rate; he has nothing to offer that the dedicated student can not find without his assistance. He is not that special. Instead go to the library or better yet; find a true master.
