As I began to change my diet to battle high cholesterol, I began cooking more vegetarian dishes. This is packed full of great recipes which you can further tailor depending on your veggies-on-hand. The gratin recipe is an example.........you can do a million things with it. This book really helped convince my tastebuds that eating more vegetables is a good thing in more ways than one.

Any cookbook writer who can keep a busy parent and professional up and smiling while making vegetarian chili at 2 a.m. deserves a medal. Mollie Katzen is that writer: her recipes are smart, accessible, and truly humorous. I was raised with my mother cooking from the original Moosewood cookbook, and I remember loving everything, especially the Hungariain Mushroom Soup. The new version has updated a few things that make everything even tastier, and while I was initially a little disturbed that they "defatted" some of the recipes, it was all redeemed by the fact that they left the banana bread recipe alone. And you will not find a finer banana bread recipe.
