Cocaine, Death Squads, and the War on Terror: U.S. Imperialism and Class Struggle in Colombia

Cocaine, Death Squads, and the War on Terror: U.S. Imperialism and Class Struggle in Colombia Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Book News Annotation:

Villar (politics, Charles Sturt U.) and Cottle (politics, U. of Western Sydney) investigate the so-called Crystal Triangle of cocaine production and trade between Columbia, Bolivia and Peru. They critically examine the role of the United States in supporting the "narco-bourgeoisie" of Columbia in particular, whose interests include exploiting the landless poor for labor in coca production and crushing the rebel groups like FARC that would organize revolution. They consider the advent of the cocaine industry from coca cultivation, the relationship between the "narco-state" and "narco-economy," "Plan Columbia," and the privatization and corporatization of the American war on drugs. They argue "in a nutshell, the war on drugs and terror is part of a counterrevolutionary strategy designed to maintain rather than eliminate the economic conditions that allow the drug trade to thrive."
