Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Good Morning America correspondent Lara Spencer is a self-confessed frugalista with a passion for shopping at yard sales, thrift shops, and estate sales, and for decorating her home and friends homes with her fabulous finds. In I Brake for Yard Sales, Lara shares her secrets for bargain hunting and tells you where to shop, what to look for, how to pay for it, how to restore it, and finally, where to put it in your house. Looking for the newest arrivals at your local thrift shops? After busy Saturdays and no-pick-up Sundays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays are generally the best days to shop for fresh items. Peppered with wisdom from world-renowned appraisers whom Lara knows from her previous work on Antiques Roadshow as well as contributions from well-known designers, this book also features the house of comedienne and good friend Kathy Griffin, which Spencer herself refurbished and decorated.

Synopsis:

Featuring more than 150 innovative furniture flips for every room in the house, this is a must-have guide for those looking to save money, live greener, and create unique pieces that showcase individual style. The projects can all be made in no more than a weekend and with minimal tools and skills, so projects are accessible for everyone!

Because chapters are organized by room, readers can easily find perfect projects and ideas for every area of the house. Even reluctant DIYers will be inspired by the transformation of a tired 1970s highboy dresser into a functional bathroom unit, an old entertainment armoire into a central kitchen organizer, and a trio of mismatched chairs into a unique bench. A helpful reference section provides information on sources and tools.

While I didn't get this book at a yard sale, flea market or thrift shop, it was still a fun find, good buy and a great read!
Written by Good Morning America coanchor and former host of Antiques Roadshow, Lara Spencer teaches us what to bring ("Your Flea-Emergency Kit"), what to look for (an old storage trunk made into a small cocktail table that doubles as storage? Yes!), and how to refurbish and decorate with your new treasures.
After reading this book, I feel a new sense of confidence going yard-saling or even purchasing used items online. This book was truly a hidden treasure I'm glad I picked up!
